Function Sulfotransferase that utilizes 3'-phospho-5'-adenylyl sulfate (PAPS) as sulfonate donor to catalyze the sulfate conjugation. Preferentially sulfonates cholesterol. Catalyzes sulfation of the 3beta-hydroxyl groups of steroids, such as, pregnenolone and dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA). Cholesterol sulfation is approximately 10-fold higher than for pregnenolone and 20-fold higher than for DHEA. Plays a role in epidermal cholesterol metabolism and in the regulation of epidermal proliferation and differentiation.; [Isoform 2]: Strongly sulfonates pregnenolone, however is capable to sulfonates cholesterol with a high degree of efficiency. DHEA is a relatively poor substrate.
